The Boy
Dani slowly opened her eyes. The room was dimly lit and her eyes weren’t focusing. She put her hand to her head and it came away wet. Why was she bleeding? Dani stood up and immediately regretted it as blood rushed to her head and she nearly fell over.
She had to find the door.
Her legs weren’t working properly. As she walked, she dragged her right foot and it left a streak of blood. It looked like she was in a large warehouse with shelves filled with parts. Parts for what, she had no idea. Light streamed in through filth streaked windows, and there was a pungent smell of grease and diesel.
“Where is the boy?” A man stepped out into the light. He had neatly trimmed salt and pepper hair and he was wearing a white lab coat. “I will let you go just give me the boy.”
It seemed like a lifetime ago when she found the small boy on the side of the road. He seemed so helpless, but she was wrong.
“I am here,” a voice boomed. It was unnaturally loud considering it was the voice of a small child. “Leave her alone. You do not want to make me angry.”
“You know I can’t do that.”
The boy raised his hands and seemed to shove the air towards the man, and in a blink he was gone. The boy timidly looked at her.
Dani knelt down and wrapped her arms around him.
